Part of maintaining our Yanmar 4JH45 diesel engines and SD60 sail drives is making sure our output seals and O-ring are changed when required. I did ours while we were hauled out in Trinidad and created this video has a helpful DIY resource.
In it, I cover how to remove and replace the SD60 output seals and O-rings before reinstalling it into the sail drive leg.
The SD60 sail drive is compatible with a range of Yanmar engines including the 3JH5E, 3JH40, 4JH5E, 4JH45, 4JH4-TE, 4JH57, and 4JH80. These engines are installed on a variety of different boats including Leopard Catamarans, Seawind and Lagoon.

Tools, parts and consumables
These are the main tools and consumables I used to complete the job. Most we already had aboard our Leopard 45.
- Mechanic pick set
- 8mm hex bit socket with a 3/8 inch driver
- Homemade bearing race removal tool
- Hammer
- Press kit
- 100% brass bristle brush
- 15W 40 sail drive oil
- NBU 30 Grease
- High temperature RTV sealant
- Metric Allen key set
- Torque wrench
- Thread locker
For parts, I used the Yanmar output seal kit which has correct number of seals and O-rings all together in a single set.

Advice for removing the bearing race
This is a close up photo of the aluminum tool I made to help remove our bearing race without damaging the components. The hole in the metal was already there as this was a scrap piece of metal we had laying around, it’s the hand shaped sloped end that is the key part.
You could use a correctly sized socket and extension but this can carry a small chance of cracking the bearing race. We chose to avoid this by making a specialized tool which we’re keeping aboard for future services.
