Often when you're heading out for a sail or starting a long passage you lift anchor in the morning, taking advantage of the natural light to help you navigate your way out of the anchorage to open sea. When you're focused on this you don't want to be hungry or worrying about when breakfast is coming.
To help, here's a list of on-the-go sailing breakfasts that are easy to manage and eat while you're busy trying to get the boat underway. Some can be prepared the night before while others are easy to eat as you do your yachting duties.
1. Quiche
One of my favourite grab and go breakfasts back when I was working, quiche is easy to make in advance then eat cold or reheat in the microwave.
I prefer to make smaller quiche cups in muffin tins (easier to eat on the go) using egg, cheese, bacon, garlic, onion and peas, but you can add just about any filling you want including spinach, mushrooms, sundried tomatoes and red peppers. I recently saw a tasty looking hash brown version that's on my list of things to try!
2. Smoothie packs
If you have a blender aboard you can pre-prepare smoothie ingredients (fruits, greens, seeds) then in the morning quickly blend it with your choice of milk, juice, or water for a quick, nutritious breakfast.
We make ours using a versatile immersion blender then put them in a vacuum insulated cup to keep the temperature consistent while we zip around doing things. Personally I love bananas, blueberries, honey and milk in mine!
3. Overnight oats
To be honest I'm not much of an oats eater but on passage it's one of Tynan's go-to meals. For an on-the-go version you can mix oats with milk or yogurt and your favorite toppings the night before you're planning to depart, storing it in the fridge in an airtight jar. In the morning simply grab one out and you have a ready-to-eat meal.
4. Breakfast burritos
Packed with protein, veggies, and a little bit of everything delicious, breakfast burritos are a complete meal wrapped in a warm tortilla, making them easy to eat on the run. Personally I love them loaded with scrambled eggs, cheese, bacon and that's it, but you can also go for other ingredients like avocado, sausage, bell pepper and mushroom.
5. Fruit and yogurt parfaits
If you like something sweet, filling and relatively healthy, then layer yogurt with granola and fresh fruit in an airtight jar to create your own fruit and yoghurt parfaits. This portable breakfast is easy to make ahead of time and if you need to run off and do something simply screw the lid back on and save the rest for later.
6. Banana bread
Banana bread is a great one-handed breakfast and a favourite among our crew. We generally make our own using old banana's but there are a few bakeries we've come across in our travels who make truly phenomenal banana bread (El Nido in the Philippines is the global winner!). Our preferences is to toast it a little in the frypan, slather in butter then leave on the table for people to grab as they go past.
7. Chia pudding
A superfood that's high in protein and fiber, chia seeds provide a boost of energy to start the day. To create a chia pudding, simply mix chia seeds with your choice of milk and let it sit overnight. In the morning, add fruits, nuts, or honey for a fiber-rich breakfast.
8. Greek yogurt with honey and nuts
Keeping it nice and simple, you can combine Greek yoghurt with a drizzle of honey and a handful of nuts. This high-protein breakfast is perfect for busy mornings and can be portioned out into small containers that move around as you do. I prefer vanilla Greek yoghurt over natural, but the choice is yours!
9. Stuffed pita pockets
Fast, portable, and endlessly customizable, stuffed pita pockets are a lifesaver when you need breakfast to be ready in a flash. Fill a piece of pita bread with ingredients like scrambled eggs, spinach, cheese, and ham, or go for a Mediterranean twist with hummus, cucumber, tomato, and feta. Personally I like to toast mine with cheese, prosciutto, olives, garlic and spicy salami, so the outside is crispy and cheese melts down. The best part? They're relatively self-contained so there’s minimal mess, and you can prepare it the night before.
10. Mini frittatas
Mini frittatas are like quiche cups without the crust. Bake them in a muffin tin or on a stove in a skillet with eggs, cheese, and your favorite mix-ins such as diced peppers, peas, mushroom, cherry tomato, onions, bacon, spinach or sausage.
Once cooled, they store well in the fridge and are easy to grab for a protein-packed breakfast.
11. Energy balls
When you're in a rush, energy balls are a quick grab-and-go option that’s both filling and nutritious. Made from ingredients like oats, nuts, peanut butter, honey, chocolate chips or chia seeds, they can be prepared in advance and stored for weeks. My favourites are the date based balls, like this one which has just 3 ingredients.
12. Bacon & egg toastie
Nothing beats the comfort of a classic bacon and egg toastie! Use your favorite bread, add crispy bacon, a fried egg, and a slice of cheese, then toast it to golden perfection. To make it even more practical for a morning on the move, wrap it in foil to keep it warm and prevent spills.
13. Savory muffins
Savory muffins are a nice alternative to sweet breakfast options. Packed with ingredients like cheese, spinach, bacon, and even grated zucchini, they’re like a meal in a handheld form. These muffins are easy to bake ahead of time, and they keep well in an airtight container, making them an excellent option for multi-day passages. If you haven't made them before, give this recipe a try.
14. Cinnamon rolls
For those with a sweet tooth, cinnamon rolls can be a delightful breakfast treat. You can make them from scratch or use pre-made dough for convenience. Bake a batch the night before and warm them slightly in the morning. Alternatively if you really like savory, as we do, you could always do a ham and cheese pizza scroll.
15. Breakfast cookies
Who says cookies are just for dessert? Breakfast cookies can be a healthy and filling way to start the day. Made with things like oats, mashed bananas, nuts, and dried fruits, these cookies are easy to munch on while you’re busy with morning sailing tasks. Plus, they can often be made with pantry staples if you haven't had a chance to provision yet.
