How to Filter Water on the Dock or Hardstand

Updated: May 27

When our catamaran is at anchor, our drinking water system is replenished by a reverse osmosis water maker that produces clean, potable water on demand. When we're at a dock or on the hardstand, it's a different story.

In marina's and shipyards yacht water tanks are usually refilled using mains water. The problem is the mains water can be filled with contaminants from the pipelines that can collect in your fresh water tank. It decreased your water quality and means that sediment can build up on the bottom of the tank, which you then need to clean out.

To solve the problem this is the simple and reusable water filter I made to run inline with our hose, in order to improve the quality of the drinking water going into our tanks.

Marina and shipyard water filter components

The water filter system is made of a few key components. I purchased ours from a local store, but equivalent parts are also available online from places like Amazon.

Putting the filter together

The thread to hose adaptors are screwed to the input and output of the filter housing, then the male hose connectors are screwed into the adaptor. At that point you just need to put the filter in and run the hoses.

When putting everything together I used food grade silicone grease to lubricate the seals and PTFE tape for the threads to ensure a water tight seal.

As you can see ours is screwed to a post but that's not necessary, it just made sense for us to do given we were hauled out for a long term stay.

Benefits of using a filter

These are some of the benefits to making a filter like this for when you have to fill your tanks from mains water.

  • Filters drinking water to improve the quality

  • Can use generic replacement filters rather than needing specialty replacement parts

  • Cuts down on sediment and contaminants that can build up and need to be cleaned from the water tanks

  • Easy to store and re-use as you sail around between marina's, shipyards and anchorages.
