Using YouTube Fitness Channels to Stay Fit on a Sailboat

Updated: May 27

Living on a boat and cruising the world is an exciting way to live but there are times when staying fit can be hard. We find this especially true when we're on long passages, the weather is poor or we're hauled out in shipyards. One of the greatest resources to help you exercise on a sailboat is YouTube.

Here's six YouTube fitness channels I have personally trialed and enjoyed using while trying to get and stay fit on the boat. As a bonus, I've also included one special mention who has an intimate understanding of what living on a boat is like.

Workout equipment we have on the boat:

Grow with Jo

Over 5.5M subscribers | More than 375 videos

When I first discovered Grow with Jo my fitness had slid so I enjoyed the fact that her videos can be used no matter what your fitness level is.

I find that Jo has a very bubbly personality, is relatable and encouraging of her audience. She frequently publishes free, full length workout videos on her YouTube channel that are largely standing and equipment free. There's also has a fun series of dance party workouts which are 10-20 minutes long and usually have a musical theme tying them together.

Mad Fit

Over 9M subscribers | More than 910 videos

Run by Canadian fitness blogger Maddie Lymburner, Mad Fit focuses on apartment friendly, at home workouts. Her videos tend to incorporate HIIT exercises and are mixture of equipment and equipment free. Personally we don't keep any weights aboard so it's good to have access to equipment free workouts.

Maddie also brings dance into it at times with a huge playlist of dance party workouts and workouts to individual songs. My favourite is the 2000's Dance Workout linked above!

Chloe Ting

Over 25M subscribers | More than 430 videos

I discovered Chloe Ting while we were hauled out in Trinidad and I was looking for something I could do inside the boat in the evens. I found her to be more challenging than Grow with Jo and to be honest, wouldn't recommend it for beginners. It's HIIT style training that generally doesn't' need any equipment. When I followed her videos diligently it was hard but I did notice results, both in my appearance and strength.

Chloe's programs are all totally free and you can visit her website to gain access to 21+ day challenges where there's a curated selection of her YouTube workouts to complete.

The Fitness Marshall

Over 6.2M subscribers | More than 1200 videos

When I first tried The Fitness Marshall I was blown away with his high intensity and fun attitude, but to be honest I did NOT have the coordination to keep up. I had to go back and do some of the other easier dance workouts from channels like Mad Fit and Grow with Jo before I was anywhere near able to keep up with him and his crew. That being said, if you love dance and have some rhythm then this might be the perfect way to fit in some sailboat exercise.

Moving Mango Pilates

Over 140K subscribers | More than 1400 videos

While there are much bigger channels out there, Moving Mango Pilates became my go-to for Pilates workouts. All I needed was a mat and maybe some resistance bands, and her soothing voice and workouts left me feeling relaxed and strong at the end.

Some of her YouTube content is members only but there's still a huge range of videos to keep you busy from January through to December.

Fitness Blender

Over 6.1M subscribers | More than 1300 videos

Fitness Blender was started by a husband and wife team of personal trainers and has grown to become a huge force in the at-home fitness realm. As a result they're a great resource for keeping fit on a boat. There is a huge range of workouts including HIIT, cardio, yoga, strength and Pilates. I used to do a lot of the HIIT workouts and liked that they often included easier versions for people who were still building their fitness up.

Special Mention: Boat Fit

Over 400 subscribers | More than 50 videos

Boat Fit is a fitness and nutritional channel run by Laura who lives aboard a sailboat with her husband and kids. If you're into watching sailing YouTube channels you might know her better as a member of the Sailing Holly Blue crew.

The Boat Fit YouTube channel seems to be designed to be a means to share the program on their website, which I haven't used, but I like that it lets you see fitness on a boat in action.
